Didcot was first designated as a growth area in 1979 and is likely to grow by another 9,000 homes over the next 20 to 25 years. As a result, Didcot's population is likely to increase from 15,000 in 1981 to over 35,000 residents by 2016. With this rapid growth Didcot has a real opportunity to improve on its facilities and develop a strong image.
South Oxfordshire District Council has entered into a partnership with the Government to access much needed funding for this purpose. As part of this partnership a number of exciting, jointly funded projects are being undertaken:
Wantage is an historic market town, thought to be the birth place of King Alfred. The former industrial area around Limborough Road has recently been redeveloped to provide a new Sainsbury's supermarket, other shops and housing.
Grove is a large village to the north of Wantage. The key local employment areas for the two communities are at Grove Technology Park, Crown Packaging, Williams F1 and Autotype. There are plans to build up to 2,500 houses on the former airfield west of Grove. The development will include a new primary and secondary school, library, community buildings, sports pitches and a park.
